    Multidimensional Trellis Coded Phase Modulation Using a Multilevel Concatenation Approach

    The first part of this paper presents a simple and systematic technique for constructing multidimensional M-ary phase shift keying (MMK) trellis coded modulation (TCM) codes. The construction is based on a multilevel concatenation approach in which binary convolutional codes with good free branch distances are used as the outer codes and block MPSK modulation codes are used as the inner codes (or the signal spaces). Conditions on phase invariance of these codes are derived and a multistage decoding scheme for these codes is proposed. The proposed technique can be used to construct good codes for both the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and fading channels as is shown in the second part of this paper

    Preparation and Characterization of Low Dielectric Methyl Silsesquioxane (MSSQ) Thin Films

    As feature sizes in integrated circuits approach 0.18 ㎛ and below, problems such as interconnect RC delay and crosstalk become more serious. Materials with low dielectric constants are needed to solve these problems. We applied methyl silsesquioxane (MSSQ) as a low dielectric material and studied the film formation condition and the electrical properties of MSSQ films. MSSQ dissolved in a propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) and MSSQ/PGMEA solution was spun on glass substrates at various concentrations. Spinning at 2,500 rpm for 30 sec resulted in films with thicknesses of 6,500 A. Then, we cured the films by heating and measured the electrical properties of samples sandwiched between Al electrodes. The dielectric constant was ~ 2.7, the breakdown strength was about 2.3 MV/cm, and the leakage current was 5.4 X 10-10 A/cm2. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) indicated that the curing reaction started at about 200 ℃ and proceeded very fast up to 250 ℃. The structural change in the MSSQ films during curing was monitored by following the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) absorption intensity of the Si-O stretching vibration, which showed that the Si-O structure became more asymmetric during curing and/or network formation.This work was supported in part by the Korean Collaborative Project for Excellence in Basic System IC Technology (98-B4-C0-00-01-00) and the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) through the Hyperstructured Organic Materials Research Center (HOMRC)

    Triage Method for Out-of-Hospital Poisoned Patients

    The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a triage method to prevent unnecessary emergency department visits of out-of-hospital poisoned patients. From October 2003 to September 2004, the calls that lay persons gave to the Seoul Emergency Medical Information Center to seek advices on the out-of-hospital poisoned patients were enrolled. We designed a triage protocol that consisted of five factors and applied it to the patients. According to the medical outcomes, we classified the patients into two groups, the toxicity-positive and the toxicity-negative. We arranged the factors on the basis of the priority that was determined in order of the odds ratio of each factor for the toxicity-positive and made a flow chart as a triage method. Then we calculated a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of the method. We regarded the specificity as the ability of the method and the sensitivity as the safety. A total of 220 patients were enrolled in this study. The method showed a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of 99.2%, 53.4%, 76.2%, and 97.9%, respectively.     Comparative cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes patients taking dapagliflozin versus empagliflozin: a nationwide population-based cohort study

    Background Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors displayed cardiovascular benefits in type 2 diabetes mellitus in previous studies; however, there were some heterogeneities regarding respective cardiovascular outcomes within the class. Furthermore, their efficacies in Asians, females, and those with low cardiovascular risks were under-represented. Thus, we compared the cardiovascular outcomes between new users of dapagliflozin and empagliflozin in a broad range of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using a nationwide population-based real-world cohort from Korea. Methods Korean National Health Insurance registry data between May 2016 and December 2018 were extracted, and an active-comparator new-user design was applied. The primary outcome was a composite of heart failure (HF)-related events (i.e., hospitalization for HF and HF-related death), myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular death. The secondary outcomes were individual components of the primary outcome. Results A total of 366,031 new users of dapagliflozin or empagliflozin were identified. After 1:1 nearest-neighbor propensity score matching, 72,752 individuals (mean age approximately 56 years, 42% women) from each group were included in the final analysis, with a follow-up of 150,000 ~ person-years. Approximately 40% of the patients included in the study had type 2 diabetes mellitus as their sole cardiovascular risk factor, with no other risk factors. The risk of the primary outcome was not different significantly between dapagliflozin and empagliflozin users (hazard ratio [HR] 0.93, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.855–1.006). The risks of secondary outcomes were also similar, with the exception of the risks of HF-related events (HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.714–0.989) and cardiovascular death (HR 0.76, 95% CI 0.618–0.921), which were significantly lower in the dapagliflozin users. Conclusions This large-scale nationwide population-based real-world cohort study revealed no significant difference in composite cardiovascular outcomes between new users of dapagliflozin and empagliflozin. However, dapagliflozin might be associated with lower risks of hospitalization or death due to HF and cardiovascular death than empagliflozin in Asian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.This project is an investigator-initiated trial.     X-ray emission from the Sombrero galaxy: discrete sources

    We present a study of discrete X-ray sources in and around the bulge-dominated, massive Sa galaxy, Sombrero (M104), based on new and archival Chandra observations with a total exposure of ~200 ks. With a detection limit of L_X = 1E37 erg/s and a field of view covering a galactocentric radius of ~30 kpc (11.5 arcminute), 383 sources are detected. Cross-correlation with Spitler et al.'s catalogue of Sombrero globular clusters (GCs) identified from HST/ACS observations reveals 41 X-rays sources in GCs, presumably low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We quantify the differential luminosity functions (LFs) for both the detected GC and field LMXBs, whose power-low indices (~1.1 for the GC-LF and ~1.6 for field-LF) are consistent with previous studies for elliptical galaxies. With precise sky positions of the GCs without a detected X-ray source, we further quantify, through a fluctuation analysis, the GC LF at fainter luminosities down to 1E35 erg/s. The derived index rules out a faint-end slope flatter than 1.1 at a 2 sigma significance, contrary to recent findings in several elliptical galaxies and the bulge of M31. On the other hand, the 2-6 keV unresolved emission places a tight constraint on the field LF, implying a flattened index of ~1.0 below 1E37 erg/s. We also detect 101 sources in the halo of Sombrero. The presence of these sources cannot be interpreted as galactic LMXBs whose spatial distribution empirically follows the starlight. Their number is also higher than the expected number of cosmic AGNs (52+/-11 [1 sigma]) whose surface density is constrained by deep X-ray surveys. We suggest that either the cosmic X-ray background is unusually high in the direction of Sombrero, or a distinct population of X-ray sources is present in the halo of Sombrero.Comment: 11 figures, 5 tables, ApJ in pres

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented

    Advances in Molecular Quantum Chemistry Contained in the Q-Chem 4 Program Package

    A summary of the technical advances that are incorporated in the fourth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program is provided, covering approximately the last seven years. These include developments in density functional theory methods and algorithms, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) property evaluation, coupled cluster and perturbation theories, methods for electronically excited and open-shell species, tools for treating extended environments, algorithms for walking on potential surfaces, analysis tools, energy and electron transfer modelling, parallel computing capabilities, and graphical user interfaces. In addition, a selection of example case studies that illustrate these capabilities is given. These include extensive benchmarks of the comparative accuracy of modern density functionals for bonded and non-bonded interactions, tests of attenuated second order Møller–Plesset (MP2) methods for intermolecular interactions, a variety of parallel performance benchmarks, and tests of the accuracy of implicit solvation models. Some specific chemical examples include calculations on the strongly correlated Cr2 dimer, exploring zeolite-catalysed ethane dehydrogenation, energy decomposition analysis of a charged ter-molecular complex arising from glycerol photoionisation, and natural transition orbitals for a Frenkel exciton state in a nine-unit model of a self-assembling nanotube
